The top page is the best place to learn intro to meteorology that I have found yet. The site is huge though so you have to look around. There is no easy way to learn how to read computer models. You can read computer models when you understand what the weather maps mean. The only way to do that is to learn meteorology. I’ll be honest. It is a bitch to do. I still work on it after eight years. My first two years of chasing I probably spent one hour every night reading one of my meteorology books. I can tell you the books to get, but if you aren’t going to be committed and actually read them it won’t do you any good. The first book you should read is Meteorology Today. It is a college course book for intro to meteorology. It starts from the bottom and teaches you the basics. It is really easy to learn and you should be able to find a used one really cheap. The second book you should get is Tim Vasquez’s Forecasting Handbook. If you make it that far then I’ll tell you what to move on to next. Studying to become a forecaster for storm chasing purposes is best done by learning regular meteorology until you’re competent in all that stuff and then shifting your focus to mesoscale meteorology and finally storm scale meteorology. Mesoscale meteorology is by far the most important part of forecasting for a chaser. Mesoscale just means and area the size of a state or even smaller. It’s just a fancy term for smaller scale. You aren’t looking the entire plains, instead you are focused in on a certain area. That is what mesoscale means. Anyways, if you really want to learn order tha first book and start reading that guys site. Also go to Stormtrack and read people’s forecast posts on there. They have a question and answer forum too where you can get the best chasers in the world to answer you questions.
